“IF YOU ARE MAKING PLANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS, THEY NEED TO ALIGN WITH THE PLANS YOU HAVE FOR LIFE.”
DANIELLA GENAS TELLS PODCAST ABOUT HER JOURNEY SO FAR & WHAT SHE HOPES WILL COME NEXT
TAKING time out to reflect where you have come from, is as important as planning your future direction of travel.
That’s why I was delighted to share the story behind my career so far and what I hope will come next in a brand new podcast.
I was invited to be a part of the BEYOUROWN Podcast series, hosted by the Forbes 30 Under 30 founder Samanah Duran.
The weekly podcast interviews and highlights the work of some of the country’s most incredible female entrepreneurs on a mission to succeed. You can find out more about the podcast here.
But life’s busy and it can be hard to find the time. So until you get a moment to pause and listen to the podcast, here’s a snapshot of what I had to say:
“I teamed up with three friends from uni and we started our first business. We then started the business, but actually, it wasn’t really a business at that point. It was just a group of friends coming together, thinking we knew what we were doing. In fact we didn’t have a clue at all what we were doing! We were given some pretty poor advice by different sets of people, and within a year it went from the four of us kind of running this project to me running a business.
“So, I re-registered, the other three ladies went their separate ways for one reason or another, some amicably, some not quite so amicably, and I kind of was back at square one, trying to decide well, ‘what do I really want to do?’”
“We’ve been through a lot of changes over the last few years. I initially registered as Genas Enterprise Consultants. I was feeling a little bit self indulgent with that one! But then I realised that actually that wasn’t going to work, so I rebranded as She’s The Boss.
“I spent a lot of time really doing a lot of research around what the key success factors are for a growth business and for a business that can grow in a sustainable way.
“I took part in a lot of work with an organisation called Innovate UK as a senior growth advisor and really tested and developed the model that I created. I continued to run the business from the side whilst carrying on with my research and development work with Innovate UK.
“I then went full time and have continued to grow the business ever since.
“I’m very strategic. I have three, five and ten-year plans for the business and for myself. And one of the things that I always say to my clients is that your business and your life are interlinked.
“Actually, if you’re making plans for your business, they need to align with the plans you have for your life and I have very clear plans for both.”
“Too many people let their business run them as opposed to them running their business. They just go with the flow and then complain that they don’t have any balance. But ask yourself: did you set the balance?
“Also, consider, what do you want your business and your life to look like and what does your business need to be built like so you can afford to live the way you want?
“That’s the first thing. Then the second thing is being intentional and setting boundaries. This all means that getting to making a million pounds in my sleep is probably going to take a little bit longer! But that’s the sacrifice I have to make for the balance that I want now. It doesn’t mean I’m never going to get there. It just means I’m probably going to be happier in the process of reaching my end point.”
